Sea moss — the red seaweed Chondrus crispus, also called Irish moss, usually sold as a gel, capsule, or gummy — has become one of the most-hyped "superfoods" on social media, and weight loss is near the top of its supposed benefits. The pitch usually runs: it's packed with minerals, it forms a gel that fills you up, it "boosts your thyroid" and therefore your metabolism, and it melts fat. This is an independent, evidence-first review, not medical advice — and the honest version of that story is much smaller and comes with a real caution.

Here is the bottom line up front. No human trial shows that sea moss causes weight loss. What sea moss is — and the kernel of truth

Sea moss is a red marine alga traditionally used as a thickener (it's a source of carrageenan, the food-industry gelling agent). It does contain a mix of minerals — notably iodine — plus some soluble polysaccharides that give it its characteristic gel. That gel-forming, partly viscous-fiber quality is the only plausibly real weight-relevant mechanism here: viscous and gel-forming fibers slow gastric emptying and can blunt food intake and post-meal glucose to a modest degree1. The iodine problem with the "thyroid boost" claim

The single most common sea-moss weight-loss claim — "it boosts your thyroid and revs your metabolism" — gets the biology backwards, and it matters. Sea moss is iodine-rich, and seaweed iodine content is highly variable and can be very high. Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone, but the relationship is a U-shaped curve: both too little and too much iodine cause thyroid dysfunction. Excess iodine can trigger hypothyroidism (and goiter) or, in susceptible people, hyperthyroidism, and can unmask autoimmune thyroid disease6.
